Electoral Commission Opens Nomination Process for 2026 General Elections
KAMPALA — The Electoral Commission (EC) has officially opened the nomination process for aspirants seeking to contest in Uganda’s 2026 general elections, beginning with presidential candidates.
From August 11 to August 24, presidential hopefuls can pick up supporter forms, nomination forms, and nomination guidelines from the EC. According to EC spokesperson Julius Mucunguzi, the supporter forms require aspirants to gather signatures from at least 100 registered voters in at least two-thirds of Uganda’s districts—equivalent to 98 districts—as stipulated by law. “These supporters must be registered voters in the districts where they endorse a candidate,” Mucunguzi explained.
The nomination forms are designed to capture candidate details, while the guidelines outline the legal and procedural requirements to ensure valid nominations.
Parliamentary aspirants, including those vying for special interest group seats, are now able to download their forms and guidelines from the EC website (www.ec.or.ug). Aspirants for district and city chairperson positions can also access forms online, while local government councillor candidates will collect theirs from EC district offices.
Mucunguzi urged all political hopefuls to thoroughly review the nomination guidelines to ensure full compliance with the law.
He further announced a rescheduling of the parliamentary nominations, initially set for September, to October 15 and 16. Other nomination dates remain unchanged.
