Monsignor Expedito Magembe, Renowned Ugandan Priest, Passes Away at 88
Monsignor Expedito Magembe, the long-time leader of Mt. Sion Prayer Centre in Bukalango, has passed away. He died on Friday, May 9, 2025, following an illness.
The Catholic community in Uganda is mourning the loss of Monsignor Expedito Magembe, the revered founding director of Mount Sion Prayer Centre in Bukalango, who passed away today at the age of 88. The Archdiocese of Kampala confirmed his death through a statement by Archdiocesan Chancellor Rev. Fr. Pius Male Ssentumbwe, on behalf of Archbishop Paul Ssemogerere, expressing "profound sorrow" at the loss of the beloved priest.
Monsignor Magembe, a towering figure in Uganda’s Catholic Church, had been battling a prolonged illness, though he remained a spiritual beacon until his final days. His passing marks the end of an era for the Mount Sion Prayer Centre, which he established in 1993 and transformed into a vibrant hub for worship, drawing thousands with his charismatic “Sangaalo” prayer sessions. Known for his powerful preaching, deep prayer life, and iconic crucifix and rosary, Magembe dedicated his ministry to guiding Catholics back to the Church, particularly those swayed by Pentecostal movements.
A prolific liturgical musician, Magembe composed nearly 1,000 hymns, many of which are cherished in the Luganda Catholic hymn book Muje Tutendereze Mukama. His musical contributions earned him the prestigious Cherubim Musical Honour in February 2024. Celebrated as one of Uganda’s greatest liturgical musicians alongside Fr. James Kabuye and Rev. Fr. Joseph Namukangula, his legacy in sacred music will endure.
Magembe’s spiritual influence extended beyond music and prayer. As the chief exorcist of the Kampala Archdiocese, he was respected for his unwavering devotion and leadership. In 2012, he was elevated to the rank of Monsignor by the Pope in recognition of his exceptional service. Last year, he celebrated 50 years of priesthood, a milestone that underscored his lifelong commitment to faith.
The news of his passing has sparked an outpouring of grief across social media, with posts on X reflecting the deep impact he had on the faithful. One user wrote, “My dear Catholics, we have lost our loved Msgr. Magembe Expedito, May His Soul Rest In Peace,” while another called him “our Fr. Jajja,” a term of endearment meaning grandfather. The Mount Sion Prayer Centre and Bukalango TV, both founded by Magembe, are expected to serve as focal points for tributes in the coming days.
False reports of his death had circulated in January 2025, which the Church swiftly debunked. Today’s announcement, however, has left no doubt, plunging Bukalango and the wider Catholic community into mourning. Details of his funeral arrangements are yet to be released, but the Archdiocese has promised to provide updates.
Monsignor Expedito Magembe’s life was a testament to faith, music, and service. His death leaves a void in Uganda’s Catholic Church, but his spiritual legacy will continue to inspire generations.
