Residents of Kyankima, a community within Kasangati Town Council, say they are increasingly living in fear following a surge in violent crime.
Reports suggest that organised groups of attackers, some armed with pangas—locally known as “ebijambiya”—have intensified their operations, targeting both individuals and homes. Locals say the assailants often strike in the early morning or late evening hours.
A boda boda rider, who asked not to be named, told of how he was attacked at his home on Thursday night. The attackers fled with his motorcycle, which he had recently acquired through a loan.
Residents say the incident is part of a wider pattern. In a similar attack last week, a group of armed men reportedly raided fenced rental properties, making off with household items.
Boda boda riders appear to be among the most affected, with several motorcycles reported stolen in recent weeks. For many, the losses have disrupted livelihoods and deepened anxiety in a community heavily reliant on the sector.
There are also increasing reports of random robberies in Kyankima and the surrounding areas. Victims say they are being targeted in neighbourhoods once considered safe, adding to a growing sense of insecurity.
Some residents have criticised what they describe as a limited response from security agencies, suggesting police may be struggling to contain the scale and coordination of the attacks.
As fear spreads, many people say they are restricting their movements, particularly at night. Local leaders are now calling for increased police patrols, improved surveillance, and closer cooperation between law enforcement and the community.
Police have yet to issue a detailed public response. However, residents warn that without swift and decisive action, the situation risks worsening further.
