Preparations intensify as 2026 FIFA World Cup approaches

With less than 100 days until the 2026 FIFA World Cup, preparations are intensifying across the host nations — the United States, Mexico, and Canada — ahead of the June 11 opening match in Mexico City.

Organisers are completing stadium upgrades, transport improvements and fan facilities. The historic Estadio Azteca is being renovated for the opening game, while other host cities prepare venues and fan events.

However, the build-up has been overshadowed by concerns over security and politics. Violence in Mexico following the killing of cartel leader Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes has raised safety worries, although authorities say security plans are in place.

Meanwhile, Iran’s participation in the tournament is uncertain due to escalating tensions involving the United States and Israel, with football federation president Mehdi Taj saying the situation has cast doubt on whether the team will play.

Despite these challenges, FIFA and local authorities say preparations are continuing and they remain confident the tournament will go ahead successfully.
