Tensions Escalate as Trump Confronts Ramaphosa Over White Farmer 'Genocide' Claims

A diplomatic meeting meant to ease strained U.S.-South Africa relations took a dramatic turn when U.S. President Donald Trump confronted South African President Cyril Ramaphosa with discredited claims of a "white genocide."

During a White House press conference, Trump played a controversial video featuring protest footage and a chant by opposition leader Julius Malema, implying white farmers were being murdered and persecuted in South Africa. Trump referenced land expropriation laws and accused the government of allowing white farmers to be killed without consequences.

Ramaphosa firmly denied the claims, stating that the chant did not reflect government policy and noting that the majority of crime victims in South Africa are black. He highlighted the diversity of his delegation—including prominent white South Africans—as evidence against the genocide claim.

The tension follows the U.S. granting asylum to 59 white South Africans and the recent signing of a land reform bill in South Africa allowing land seizures without compensation. Trump’s administration has also suspended aid to South Africa and expelled its ambassador, citing the country's ICJ case against Israel.

Despite the confrontation, Ramaphosa remained composed, calling for continued dialogue and reiterating South Africa’s commitment to racial reconciliation.

Critics, including former U.S. ambassador Patrick Gaspard, called the encounter a "trap" meant to embarrass South Africa. Meanwhile, Afriforum, a prominent Afrikaner NGO, admitted to using some of the footage shown in the video but denied creating the specific compilation used by Trump.
