Trump Threatens India With 25% Tariffs if No Trade Deal is Reached
US President Donald Trump has warned that India could face tariffs as high as 25% if it fails to finalise a trade deal with Washington by August 1.
"Yeah, I think so," Trump said on Tuesday when asked if Delhi would face higher tariffs in the absence of an agreement.
India and the US have been locked in trade negotiations for months, with progress described alternately as optimistic and cautious. Trump, however, has remained critical of India's trade policies, calling the country a “tariff king” and “a big abuser” of trade ties.
“India has charged basically more tariffs than almost any other country... but now I’m in charge, and you just can’t do that,” Trump added.
While Trump has already issued tariff warning letters to over a dozen other countries, India has not yet officially received such a letter. India’s commerce ministry has not commented on the latest threat.
