The Ministry of Works and Transport has suspended YY Coaches' operations for 15 days following two fatal road crashes within a week.

In a letter dated 12 May, State Minister for Transport Fred Byamukama cited “recklessness by drivers” and “managerial concerns” after preliminary investigations pointed to unsafe driving practices.

The first crash occurred on 5 May when a bus overturned and caught fire in Buikwe District, killing three people. The driver is still on the run. Days later, while overtaking another YY bus was involved in a serious crash on the Pakwach–Arua highway.

Authorities say the company has previously faced at least four suspensions over safety issues, including a 2019 halt following crashes that killed 14 people in two weeks.

The ministry has ordered YY to ground its entire fleet by 7 pm on 13 May, present all its buses for inspection, and produce documentation on drivers’ training. The company must also account for the two drivers involved and issue a public statement outlining corrective measures.

YY Coaches operates on major long-distance routes across Uganda and into South Sudan, and is known for transporting both passengers and cargo, especially at night.

The company had not responded to the suspension as of Monday evening.
