2026 Watch: Gen. Muhoozi Praises Mpuuga, Signals Willingness to Collaborate
In a post shared on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Gen Muhoozi wrote: “Mpuuga is someone I respect and want to work with. No one will touch him. I look forward to working with him.”
Kampala, Uganda – The Chief of Defence Forces, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has publicly expressed support for former Leader of the Opposition Mathias Mpuuga, describing him as a respected figure and indicating a willingness to work with him in the future.
In a post shared on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Gen Muhoozi wrote: “Mpuuga is someone I respect and want to work with. No one will touch him. I look forward to working with him.”
The remarks come amid rising tensions within Uganda’s opposition ranks following Mpuuga’s recent launch of a new political formation, the Democratic Front, which he described as a more principled and structured alternative to existing movements.
Mpuuga, who represents Nyendo-Mukungwe in Parliament, has recently parted ways with Robert Kyagulanyi—better known as Bobi Wine—and was removed as the deputy president of the National Unity Platform (NUP) for the Buganda region earlier this year.
Once viewed as key allies within the opposition, the rift between Mpuuga and Bobi Wine has grown, with Mpuuga’s decision to go independent signalling a shift in the political landscape ahead of the 2026 general elections.
Gen Muhoozi’s comments are being closely watched, as he remains an influential figure in Uganda’s political circles. While officially non-partisan as the head of the military, he has previously voiced political opinions, including praise for Mpuuga in December 2024, when he described the MP as “president material” and “an impressive politician.”
Some analysts are interpreting his latest remarks as a potential sign of future political realignment. However, no formal alliance has been announced.
Uganda’s opposition has faced challenges in recent years, including internal divisions and limited space for political expression. Observers say Mpuuga’s new platform, coupled with Muhoozi’s visible interest, could further reshape opposition politics in the lead-up to the 2026 elections.
