Inflation Inches Up to 3.5% in April, Driven by Food and Service Costs
Uganda’s annual inflation rate rose marginally to 3.5% in the year to April 2025, up from 3.4% recorded in March, according to the latest Consumer Price Index published by the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS).
The modest increase was largely attributed to a rise in core inflation, which climbed to 3.9% in April from 3.6% the previous month, driven by notable price pressures in the beef and services sectors.
Samuel Echoku, Head of the Macroeconomic Statistics Department at UBOS, noted that while rice and sugar prices continued to decline, the rate of deflation slowed. Rice prices dropped by 0.8% in April, compared to a 5.5% decrease in March, while sugar prices fell by 10.8%, easing from a 15.1% decline the previous month.
UBOS continues to monitor price movements closely amid ongoing economic adjustments.
