Kabaka Warns Against Opportunistic Politicians Ahead of Elections

As Uganda enters a fresh election season, the Kabaka of Buganda, Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II, has urged his subjects to guard against being exploited by opportunistic politicians who promise little and deliver even less.

In a pre-recorded message played during his 32nd coronation anniversary celebrations at Kibuli Hill, the Kabaka cautioned:

“Do not fall prey to opportunists who use elections to deceive you with peanuts.”

Though he did not attend in person, the Kabaka thanked the people of Buganda—and Ugandans at large—for their unwavering loyalty to the monarchy and urged them to defend the institution from detractors.

The Katikkiro, Charles Peter Mayiga, reassured the public that the Kabaka is steadily recovering, though not yet ready to resume full duties.

Prince Kassim Nakibinge, the host and titular head of Muslims in Uganda, echoed the Kabaka’s warning, calling for active voter participation and vigilance against political manipulation.

“If you do not take part in elections, you risk being led by those who do not deserve to lead,” he said.

Nakibinge also condemned recent political violence in areas like Kawempe North and the NRM primaries, urging security forces to act justly and calling for free, fair, and peaceful elections.

The event drew leaders from government, the Buganda Kingdom, and various religious and political spheres, including Nnabagereka Sylvia Nagginda and members of the royal family.
