Former Mpigi MP Disconnects Power Line, Halts Bursaries After Election Defeat

Former Mpigi MP Yusuf Nsibambi has sparked controversy after disconnecting a 6.4-kilometre power line and transformer he says he personally funded at a cost of $153,000, following his election defeat.

Nsibambi, who lost the Mpigi District parliamentary seat on January 15, 2026, to Suzan Nakawuki, also suspended bursary support for most of the 60–66 students from underprivileged families he had been sponsoring.

Speaking to reporters, Nsibambi said he felt no obligation to continue the support after receiving what he described as few votes in return, despite years of self-funded assistance, including school fees, road works, and electricity connections.

However, electricity officials described the disconnection as illegal vandalism, prompting a police investigation. Power was later restored after repairs.

The incident has reignited debate around political patronage, entitlement, and the sustainability of community support tied to electoral politics in Uganda.
