Govt Calls on Stakeholders to Address School Dropout Rates and Youth Unemployment

By Samuel Tebuseeke || Mukono, Uganda

The government has urged all stakeholders to intensify efforts to curb the alarming school dropout rates and encouraged young people to utilize available opportunities to tackle unemployment challenges in their communities.

Dr. Kedrace Turyagyenda, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education and Sports, represented the Minister at the 18th anniversary celebrations of Incredible Youth International (IYI), held on July 25, 2025, in Mukono. The event, themed ARISE, focused on motivating young people to step out of their comfort zones and actively participate in youth empowerment initiatives.

Addressing the gathering, Dr. Turyagyenda emphasized the value of every young person in the country, reminding them, “Know that you are valuable. Decision determines destiny, and always give God priority to grant you wisdom to reach your goals.”

She highlighted that Uganda is predominantly a young nation, with about 75% of its population under 35 years of age, and 50% below 18 years, based on recent statistics from the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS). These figures underscore the critical need for focused development to nurture quality citizens. Dr. Turyagyenda noted that IYI’s three-year strategic plan aligns with national efforts toward youth development.

She also stressed the importance of determination and discipline in achieving life goals, warning youths to avoid distractions that may derail their progress.

Educationist and seasoned leader Dr. Sarah Nkonge called for enhanced career guidance as an essential tool for holistic youth development.

Mr. Brian James Ntwatwa, President and Founder of IYI, highlighted the organisation’s impact, having empowered over two million youths globally.

Incredible Youth International remains committed to empowering young people in line with both international and national frameworks aimed at youth development.
