Govt Hands Over Luxury Vehicles to Cultural Leaders

The Ugandan government has officially handed over luxury vehicles to cultural and traditional leaders from across the country, in a ceremony held at Kololo Independence Grounds on Tuesday.

The event, presided over by Vice President Jessica Alupo, saw the distribution of Toyota Land Cruisers and Prados as part of a government initiative aimed at supporting cultural leaders in the execution of their roles.

According to officials, the move is intended to ease transport challenges faced by leaders in various regions and to strengthen ties between the central government and traditional institutions.

Beneficiaries include cultural leaders from Buganda, Bunyoro, Busoga, Tooro, Acholi, and other kingdoms and chiefdoms across Uganda.

Vice President Alupo, delivering remarks on behalf of President Yoweri Museveni, commended the cultural leaders for their contribution to peacebuilding, unity, and national development, reaffirming the government’s commitment to preserving Uganda’s diverse cultural heritage.

The ceremony drew a wide audience, including Members of Parliament, religious leaders, local officials, and members of the public.

Government spokespersons noted that the donation is part of a broader strategy to empower traditional institutions, promote national cohesion, and recognise the continued relevance of cultural leadership in modern governance.

Critics, however, have previously questioned the prioritisation of such gestures amidst economic pressures and service delivery concerns.
