Israeli strike kills 4 Al Jazeera journalists, including Anas Al Sharif, in Gaza, network says
LONDON — Al Jazeera confirmed in a statement that four of its journalists, including prominent correspondent Anas Al Sharif, were killed in an Israeli airstrike targeting a tent housing reporters in Gaza City.
The others killed were correspondent Mohammed Qreiqeh and cameramen Ibrahim Zaher and Mohammed Noufal.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) claimed they targeted Sharif, accusing him of heading a Hamas cell involved in rocket attacks against Israel.
The strike occurred shortly after the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) appealed for Sharif’s protection, expressing grave concern over his safety and condemning an IDF smear campaign against him, which Sharif feared was a precursor to assassination.
Sharif was a highly influential journalist in Gaza, with millions of followers on social media. He posted on X and Instagram minutes before his death.
Since the Israel-Gaza war began on October 7, 2023, CPJ reports that 186 journalists have been killed, with at least 178 Palestinians killed by Israeli forces.
