Nigerian pilots test positive for alcohol after runway incident

Two pilots have tested positive for alcohol following a runway excursion at Port Harcourt International Airport in July.

A cabin crew member also tested positive for cannabis, the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) confirmed.

All 103 passengers on board the Boeing 737 were unharmed. Air Peace, the airline operating the flight, dismissed the 64-year-old pilot for violating safety regulations, while the co-pilot was cleared by the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority and has resumed duties.

NSIB investigations are ongoing, with recommendations including enhanced training and stricter internal safety procedures.

Aviation authorities have recently launched a flight data centre to improve aircraft safety, though experts call for further measures and technology upgrades.
