NRM Unveils Museveni’s Official Portrait for 2026 Elections

Kampala, Uganda – The National Resistance Movement (NRM) has officially unveiled President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni as its presidential candidate for the 2026 General Elections.

The launch featured the display of Museveni’s official campaign portrait and was presided over by the party’s First National Vice Chairperson, Al-Hajj Moses Kigongo, and Secretary-General Richard Todwong.

Museveni, who has led Uganda for nearly four and a half decades, first entered politics in 1980 as a young founder of the Uganda Patriotic Movement (UPM). He unsuccessfully contested a Mbarara North parliamentary seat, a setback that propelled him toward armed struggle and eventually shaped his revolutionary ideals.

After years of insurgency, Museveni’s National Resistance Army (NRA) seized power in 1986, laying the foundations for the NRM’s long-term political dominance. His early administration emphasised democracy, decentralisation, and economic revitalisation. Museveni later transitioned from rebel leader to elected president in 1996, winning the first direct presidential elections since taking power.

Over subsequent elections—2001, 2006, 2011, 2016, and 2021—Museveni successfully defended his presidency against notable opponents including Paul Ssemogerere, Kizza Besigye, Norbert Mao, Olara Otunnu, and Robert Kyagulanyi (Bobi Wine). His campaigns have focused on infrastructure development, poverty reduction, national security, and economic transformation, even as debates over political freedoms, term limits, and youth inclusion have intensified.

Advocating for an active citizenry, Museveni has consistently promoted policies to strengthen local governance, improve social services, and enhance Uganda’s regional and global standing. Critics, however, continue to raise concerns about political dominance and term extensions.

As the 2026 campaign officially begins, the NRM remains united behind Museveni. Party leaders, including Kigongo and Todwong, have reaffirmed their commitment to the party’s vision of continuity, stability, and development, positioning Museveni’s candidacy as a testament to experience and proven leadership.

The unveiling of the official campaign portrait is designed to rally support among long-time NRM followers and new voters alike, marking the start of what is expected to be a highly anticipated election campaign.
