Man Who Branded Baganda ‘Unfit to Lead’ Remanded to Luzira Over Hate Speech Claims

A man accused of stirring tribal tensions after branding Baganda as “failures” and declaring President Museveni “the real Kabaka” has been remanded to Luzira Prison after failing to secure bail.

Mugisha, who admitted to making the inflammatory remarks in a video that went viral, insisted he acted out of anger in response to an online insult. “It wasn’t hate speech,” he told Chief Magistrate Ronald Kayizzi. “Someone told me Banyarwanda should go back to their motherland — I was angry.”

Despite a courtroom apology directed at the people of Buganda, the Kabaka, and President Museveni, prosecutors argue the apology falls short of a guilty plea, maintaining the comments were meant to ridicule and demean the Baganda community.

Though the charge is bailable, Mugisha’s release was blocked after his sureties failed to provide the necessary documents. He will remain in Luzira until May 19 unless original IDs, LC letters, and his passport are submitted.
